Origins of the word "brothel" (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The word “brothel” went through changes. First it referred to a woman selling sex, or more commonly, being sold as a sexual object. The root word in Old English was bro∂en (and past participle broe∂an) meaning “deteriorate, go to ruin.” This is clearly related to the patriarchal trope of the “ruined woman,” who once “fallen” was cast down in social standing, and kept down, according to a harsh sexual double standard. I began writing it in 1978, and over decades of research, what were chapters turned into volumes. Eventually the original book (this title) turned into Vol VII of a sixteen volume series, Secret History of the Witches, which interrogates the patriarchalization of Europe and the interrelat
Suppressed Histories Archives articles page (opens the original)

I’ve been working hard to add more essays to the Articles page, with the help of tech wizard Glenn Meader (who deserves huge credit for indispensable assistance). We’ve migrated in articles from my old blog, as well as more recent photo essays from the four annual courses I’ve taught since Covid. We’re still reconnecting some images that went astray, and correcting diacritics (accent marks, punctuation) that went kablooey in transferring between platforms and media. Extraneous line breaks, missi
