I have not published anything on Substack recently because I’ve been on a three-week holiday to the British Isles in search of cooler weather. The heat in the south of France has grown intolerable over the last few years and although I’m an Englishman, I’m not a mad dog. Christopher Nolan’s film of the Odyssey is showing in cinemas. It cost $250,000 to make which is probably more than the Greeks spent in laying siege to Troy. I’m going to see it this evening.I’m fascinated at how Homer’s ancient tale has captivated people for more than two and a half millenia. If Homer existed, he was probably born in the 8th century BCE, 500 years after the Trojan War and 300 before Greece’s classical age.Thanks for reading Martin Lake's Substack
