I continue to hope for the best but worry that things could slip off the rails -if they haven't already. I appreciate the comfort that history teaches us about the cycles of progress and the backsliding, but also that generally there is progress.

Trump says SÍ to AI. Trump announced some bullsh*t agreement with AI companies that I guess is supposed to reassure us that there are now guardrails that will protect us from annihilation. The deal is vague and voluntary, or as he puts it “morally binding” and involves “tremendous self-policing.” Trump went on, “It’s almost like a constitution in a way, and the biggest people in the world signed that, and I signed it as president, and it really is a form of protection.” I wonder how it is lik

Greenland deal. The U.S. and Greenland have signed a deal that ensures Greenland could not be annexed by the U.S. In exchange, Trump can add two more military bases there. The U.S. already has one. Here’s what Julie Rademacher, chair of the Uagut, the national organization of Greenlanders in Denmark said, “After threats [for] one-and-a-half years to annex Greenland, we don’t have the same faith or the same trust in Americans and the U.S. president.” Can’t blame you. Blue wave election? Democrats are excited and Republicans are worried about midterms, but with 36 days left, anything could happen and there’s a late surge of Republican money. Dolly Parton International Airport. Nashville is renaming their airport after Dolly. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said, “It is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith and kindness.” This will be the first commercial airport named after a woman in the U.S. Well, Barbara Jordan and Amelia Earhart got terminals (Barbara Jordan Terminal at Austin-Bergstrom Interna

I went camping in Bishop, California. It’s the Eastern Sierra where there are big granite mountains all around you and the meandering Owens River (originally called the Wakopee by the Paiute people who lived there 10,000 years before Mr. Owens arrived with Kit Carson) and Buckley Ponds (artesian wells that create little oases in the middle of the high desert landscape). The Owens River temporarily disappeared when the Los Angeles Aqueduct came into being but in 2006 efforts began to restore it.
