Case: From big to small, predators in abundance can be a problem | Chattanooga Times Free Press (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Can we have too many of a certain animal in the wild? Well, if you want to bring this up at the barbershop or at the counter in the gun store, be ready for long discussions and possibly heated words from someone who has a lot of issues. As some of you know, we have hashed this out in at least one previous "Guns & Cornbread" column, but I felt it needed further discussion. Before we get too far into the labyrinth of predators and wildlife management issues, is everyone good on your coffee? Anyone
Case: Trulock’s Model 67 lives up to legacy of Winchester’s iconic .22 | Chattanooga Times Free Press (opens the original)
Read excerpt
As we have talked about before here in "Guns & Cornbread," when it comes to hunters, firearms are often more than just a tool and a gun to shoot. Many of us treasure the rifles and shotguns that were carried by those before us. Dad, Granddad, your favorite uncle and others would often leave us these tokens of their legacy, knowing their firearms would be used by another generation the same way they once used them — for quiet walks in the woods and to be admired on the gun rack at hunting camp. His buddy had received a ticket for doe hunting on the wrong side of the line in a county that was divided on where you could take antlerless deer. Hunting and fishing rules and regulations have alwa
Case: Gear up to go hunting with some shiny (or camo) new things | Chattanooga Times Free Press (opens the original)

Fall is here. I know you might still be saying "not quite yet," and as we have discussed here in "Guns & Cornbread" before, you would be right where the stars (the autumnal equinox is Sept. 22 this year) and the 12-month calendar (the "meteorological" start of the season is Sept. 1 every year) are concerned. But if you are thinking about guns and gear you might need for the fall hunting season, it's getting late. Don't be that guy — like me sometimes — who waits until two days before your season
Case: Bears often fascinating, but they can also be aggravating | Chattanooga Times Free Press (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Yes, it's true. It is time to talk about bears again. As many of you faithful readers out there know, we have talked about bears a good bit in the past. There are probably several reasons for this, including that bears are interesting creatures that quickly grab the attention of the homo sapiens crowd. Also, in my past life and the 36 years with the West Virginia DNR, I had a lot of experience with bears, and in a lot of different circumstances.
