Have you ever tried to draw a grocery cart? It’s one of the more confusing things to draw. Amongst cartoonists you often hear about bikes and horses and hands being hard to draw, and those may be true, but I would add grocery cart to the list. So many intersecting lines! When I exported the video for this one I was surprised to see the Where’s Waldo cartoon I had apparently started and then abandoned. I love those kinds of little blips of moments where you can see a caption I considered or a par

I’m back at teaching gag cartoons to a new group of students in my high school Comics class. Most of these kids have pretty much zero familiarity with gag cartoons, so there’s a lot of ground to cover to get them to wrap their minds around what they are and how they work, much less how to do them well and make them funny.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!O4yh!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.ama

One interesting sidenote that occurred since then, a little bit of inside baseball about cartooning for The New Yorker: a week or two after I submitted the final drawing, I got an email from Emma, the cartoon editor, asking for a grammatical edit. I had handwritten the word “nevermind” in the cartoon, and, turns out, it’s actually supposed to be two separate words, “never mind.” Who knew? A couple days after that I got an email from

I don’t color my cartoons often. I always draw and submit them in grayscale, but there are a few outlets like Saturday Evening Post and American Legion, where, once they accept a cartoon, want it colored. The cookie one was in the latest American Legion magazine. When I add color I use a coloring process based on the CMYK colors of many printing processes. I build up layers of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, and use their transparency where they overlap to create secondary and tertiary colors
