Grieving the Rivers (opens the original)
Read excerpt
On the last day of May, I went to do a wellness check on the Rio Grande at Albuquerque. I found a tiny trickle, a warm rivulet in the sand, not enough for the birds or the fish that depend on her. Since then, she has almost dried completely in all but her farthest northern reach. About 90 miles of the Middle Rio Grande is all sand and cracked mud where a flowing, life-giving river should be.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!pTS6!,f_auto,q_
