When I was a teenager in the 1970s, I got really into reading the Ellery Queen mystery novels. I am pretty sure that it was the TV series starring Jim Hutton that first got me into the books, but after I had plowed through all the Sherlock Holmes stories, the Ellery Queen stories were just the thing to engage my young, problem solving mind. The books, written by the team of Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee, featured a mystery writer named Ellery Queen whose father was a New York City Homicide

On my bike ride this morning I found a new-to-me Little Free Library. After dropping off a couple of books I grabbed this old copy of Stephen King’s four early Bachman novels. This includes RAGE, the novel King no longer allows to be reprinted. When I got home, I checked and yes old copies of this book go for big bucks. If it was in good condition with a dust jacket, it would probably go for over a grand. As is, this copy is probably worth at least $100 to a collector. So this afternoon, I biked
A Cool Old Bridge Mechanism (opens the original)

The Osaugie Trail here in Superior is a biking/walking path built along an old rail line. Back when it was a train line & there was commercial traffic on the Nemadji River, the train bridge would rotate 90° to let ships pass. The cedar waxwing perched there is about 6 inches tall.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href

I guess that my local Salvation Army Thrift Store has too many used books. A few weeks ago I noticed that they were selling books for the price of $1 for a foot high stack. The store also gives senior citizens a 25% discount on Tuesdays, so yesterday I bought a stack of books for a grand total of 79 cents (75 cents plus 4 cents for Wisconsin state sales tax). Christine and I already have far more books than can comfortably fit in our little home, but I was not buying the books for me. I had a pl
A Stirling Cycle Engine (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Today I bought a super cool little Stirling Cycle Engine at a garage sale in Billings Park. It was missing the alcohol burner but was otherwise intact and it also had the original owner’s manual and a book about Stirling Cycle Engines. A bargain at $14.I tried a candle as an initial heat source, but it didn’t put out enough heat. My propane torch, a $4 garage sale find from last year, provided plenty of heat, however and the engine hummed to life.A Stirling Cycle Engine needs only a heat differe
