Moving to the Bible Belt Taught Me about Unconditional Love (opens the original)
Read excerpt
“I came to this realization that my job in a way, is to think something that is different from everyone else - but I was in an environment where I was just getting all the same infromation as everyone else, and I was just thinking the same things as everyone else.” - Sune Lehmann, as quoted in the book “Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention - and How to Think Deeply Again” by Johann Hari (bold emphasis added above to highlight its importance)Have we been conditioned to stay comfortable, in s
"I Identify as..." (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I was at an art gallery one evening. A woman began to speak about her art. Her speech was less about her art and more about who she is, or I should say, who she “identifies as.” There were some beautiful and creative aspects to her art. I wanted to hear more about it. However, she launched into a speech that began with, “I identify as a trans non-binary and I have obsessive-compulsive disorder.”Immediately I felt a sense of disconnect and confusion. Irish Spring and Gummy Bears (opens the original)
Read excerpt

I can also recall the smell of the sheets at my other grandparents’ trailer in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Two men discussed a video circulating of a seven month old baby who was shot in the head by a soldier. The circulator of the video questioned, “Where is God?” or something to that effect. We have forgotten that pain does not signify the absence of Creator/benevolence. The pains of the world give us opportunities and reminders of our humanity. Pain is a reminder of our bea
On Turning 50 (opens the original)
Read excerpt
On February 20th I turned fifty. Precisely at 11:01 a.m. MST. The numbers 11:01, 111, 11, 101, and so on have followed me symbolically through my lifetime. I married my love, Carol, on 1/11 at 11:11 or so (also her brother’s day of birth) after which we traveled Hwy 111 to our hotel, only to arrive to the TV channel set to 111. The stories like this are infinite. I was born during a snow storm in a tiny town on the western slope of Colorado. The storm was so bad, my parents could not drive to th
