St. Cuthbert’s Way Day 7 (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Tina and I have done dozens of long distance walks over the last fifteen years. Neither of us can remember a final day that matches what we experienced today. For the last several days, the forecast for this morning had been stubbornly calling for rain, and we awoke in Berwick to a gray and miserable-looking day. After being dropped off by taxi at Fenwick, we walked for a few gentle miles through fields of sheep and cattle before arriving at the intersection of the Holy Island causeway and the p

Today was a rather unremarkable day on the trail with at least four miles of road walking, which can really wear on the body. There were a couple lovely stretches, particularly St. Cuthbert’s Cave, where we stopped for lunch. We also saw the North Sea and caught our first glimpse of Holy Island, our final destination for this walk.Tomorrow morning, we’ll return to Fenwick and walk a couple miles to the causeway. Thankfully, after yesterday’s challenging weather, today delivered a vast improvement and we enjoyed a day of full sun and light breezes. Thankfully, we made it though the first half of the day dry, although we were buffeted with gusts of 35-40 mph as we approached Wideopen Hill, the highest point on the entire trail.A little after midday, arriving at our inn to enjoy our packed lunches (we still had an additional five miles to walk),

This morning, we left our hotel in Melrose and returned by taxi to the point on the trail where we finished walking yesterday. Our luggage continued forward to Kirk Yetholm, a small town less than one mile west of the English border, where we’ll be based for the next three nights. Today, we walked from Harestanes to Morebattle, a distance of 11.3 miles with just over 1,300 feet of ascent. A longer and more challenging day than the first two, but quite manageable. The weather was changeable, but f
