Column: ‘Drug Court’ graduates should be celebrated (opens the original)
Read excerpt
In 1999, a drug court was set up to help people convicted of felony charges with a history of drug or alcohol abuse to become “productive and responsible members of the community.” The first graduates were honored in mid-October 2005 by local judges and then-Assemblywoman Lois Wolk. “You have done what many others have not been able to do, and that is to succeed,” Wolk told graduates Miguel Cisneros, Kristina Dement, Jonathan Jenkins, Guillermo Figueroa Santana, Jerry Shaver and one other gradua

I’ve made no secret over the years that I’m not a “car guy.” I respect those who are into “classic cars” and enjoy tinkering with or restoring them to their mint-condition beauty. The same can be said of hardware stores. I’m not gifted at home repair. But I do enjoy going to hardware stores from time to time in search of screws, nails, paint, duct tape (lots of duct tape), Gorilla Glue and light bulbs (lots of light bulbs) and other odds and ends which eventually make their way to my garage work

But making the switch from a “comfortable” 78 inside to 100-plus degrees outside really sucks. For me it means “being lazy” and c

It looks like fall is coming fast. Time to begin preparing for chilly mornings and rainy days. Given that a “Super” El Niño is also being forecast, you might also want to get out and buy some hip-waders. It’s also time to enjoy what’s happening locally in Yolo County, and here are three things that will keep you connected and amused. This Saturday will be the last Farmers Market for 2026, according to Woodland Market Director Sonia Mora. She reported that, in addition to fresh produce, there wil
Column: Will AI lead to the death of us all? (opens the original)
Read excerpt
“We’re all going to die” seems to be the phrase uttered when people talk about artificial intelligence and the incredibly resource-dependent data centers needed to power these autonomous programs. Filmmaker James Cameron warned us of AI’s dangers in 1984 when the movie “Terminator” was released, and we learned that “Skynet,” the “artificial neural network,” became conscious on Aug. 4, 1997, and eventually enslaved (or outright killed) most of mankind. Well, here it is September 2026 and we’re le
