During the late ‘60s and early ‘70s I was soaking up so much innovative and exciting music, and incredibly lucky to see so many extraordinary artists, from Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Sly & the Family Stone and The Who to Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Tony Williams’ Lifetime and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The era features strongly on this week’s playlist, although you probably know that’s nothing new for Jazz on the Beach. There’s tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson’s title track from If You’re Not Part of the Solution

This week’s playlist features two tracks from outstanding saxophonists, baritone player Serge Chaloff and alto player Art Pepper, who both dealt with the ravages of heroin addiction yet played like angels. A former member of Woody Herman’s Second Herd, Chaloff had cleaned up by the time he recorded Blue Serge (Capitol, 1956), with the great Sonny Clark on piano, double bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Here’s the wonderful opening track, A Handful of Stars, recorded at Capitol
