Athens and the breakdown of civilisation (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I travelled to Athens last week to compete in the weightlifting Masters World Championships. My daughter, Daisy, came with me to coach, and our friend Yasmin came to help in the back room.I’m lucky to have people around me who want to share the experience. We packed a lot into a few days, and I gained plenty of new material for writing!<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NSrY!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-po
Surviving the concrete jungle (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I spent last week in Orlando, Florida, on a work trip. It was a 17-hour journey from door-to-door, which was knackering. I do think US-centric Americans struggle to understand how difficult it is to travel outside of your own continent. I went a day early to allow my body to adjust. I have been ill on my last three trips to the USA (Covid twice, then the flu), and I didn’t want that to happen again.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3OUO!,f

Clearing Ivy (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Here’s a new flash fiction piece, written from a prompt at my writing group. I shall try to share more frequently, I have a dozen of these types of pieces sitting in my ‘pit’ of stories. I’ve nearly finished the current edit of my third novel. I have to then go back to input more and get the location details and characterisations correct. It shall then be ready for beta reading in October.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!k2Ck!,f_auto,q_au
More archaeology and a reboot (opens the original)
Read excerpt
After a refreshing holiday, it’s time to get back to writing. I felt like I needed a ‘reboot’ after a busy three months of life and work. My headspace has been preoccupied with work. That, and the darned heat, which has made my office unbearable to work in after noon, so I shifted my paid work to the early hours, kicking my creative side into touch.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!esp9!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%
