North Essex Astronomical Society: What to look for in the sky in October (opens the original)
Read excerpt
SATURN reaches opposition on October 4 and so will be well placed for observation all month, about 40 degrees above the horizon when at its highest in the south in the hour after midnight. As we see them, the rings are now open by about seven degrees, still quite narrow, but clearly visible in a good pair of binoculars or a small telescope. Taurus in the sky above Orion (Image: North Essex Astronomical Society) Following the Autumn Equinox on September 23, the nights lengthen throughout October.
