Behind the Scenes of The Practical Magic Garden (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Every year, I do an annual rewatch of the cult classic, Practical Magic, and get swept up in the cozy witchiness of it all. I’ve always been a Sally, and despite some of the cheesiness of it, I fall in love more and more each watch with the sisterhood, the spells, and the belief that we all carry magic in one way or another. This year, I went and saw Practical Magic 2 with my mom, and we laughed and cried together, while I also snuck a photo of the full garden layout, eager to unpack it. In the

Leafy greens can re-enter the chat as cooler temps crawl in. While brassicas are the pretty leads in the show of autumn gardening, greens are the chorus line - the foundation upon which the season rests. Much less sexy than leeks and carrots, but much more versatile. The trick is to make sure your crop does not get taken by pests and gets planted in a way that allows for cut-and-come-again purposes through the season and/or succession sowing efficiently. We didn’t even drink coffee that morning, as the anxiety was enough to overcome the sleepl

Landscape ‘trends’ tend to be much less fickle and overwhelming than those of fashion, but we do see certain rhythms and styles come in and out of favor. I’ve covered the Ralph Lauren aesthetic here, and we’ve been designing a lot of Cotswolds English countryside gardens over the past two years - both timeless and stunning. However, there are cycles of en vogue-ness, and I’ve caught a whiff of something new on the horizon. While a really well-designed space simply feels cohesive and harmonic, th
I started ballet again, after a 23 year hiatus (opens the original)

My daughter started ballet class a few weeks ago at age six and a half, after I held the concept quite loosely in my palm. I was a ballet dancer - not professionally, but it was my ‘thing’ from age tiny to about 16. I lived at the studio three or four days a week for hours on end. I loved it. Or so I thought… after two decades away from it, I couldn’t really recall whether I loved it or just did it. My parents would zoom me to class while I shoved my hair into a bun and net, changing in the car.
