I put my kayak into the muddy water at Hagg Lake. 91 degrees, no breeze—hot and still as I paddle, hugging the shoreline. I go hard and fast until I feel the burn in my shoulders. I love the feeling of pulling myself through the water, a long deep drag below the surface, a wide arc above. The burn a welcome feeling of a good workout. Then magic—I stop paddling and float.
