1 Corinthians 8 - Knowledge & Love (opens the original)
Read excerpt
As Paul begins to address the concerns of the Corinthian church about food sacrificed to idols, we see the need for Christians to restrict the exercise of our freedom in order to not wound the consciences of other Christians. Knowledge of our freedoms in Christ must be combined with love for others.
1 Corinthians 7 - Devoted to the Lord (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Paul gives instructions to the Corinthian church about marriage, sex, divorce, singleness, and remarriage. As we look at these instructions today, we learn how we can be fully devoted to the Lord who gave himself for us that we might become the bride of Christ.
1 Corinthians 6 - Bought with a Price (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The Corinthians were taking each other to court and using the slogan "all things are lawful" to justify all sorts of awful behavior. Paul reminds them that they have been bought by the blood of Jesus, having been washed, justified, and sanctified by him and the Spirit, so they must honor God with their bodies. So we too need to remember the high price of our salvation, God's great love to us and how he lives in us, as we fight temptations to engage in dishonorable conflict and sin.
1 Corinthians 5 - Cleanse The Old Leaven (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The Corinthian church had managed to outdo their very own city of Aphrodite in immorality. Paul urges the church to call sin what it is for the sake of the sinner, for the sake of the church, and for the sake of the church's witness to the world. Today, we Christians still need to be able to lovingly correct one another for those same reasons, even as we refrain from judging the world around us.
1 Corinthians 4 - Fools For Christ's Sake (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Paul closes his exhortations to the Corinthian church about their divisions and social climbing, pointing them to his own example as one constantly rejected by the world and dismissed as the scum of the earth. He invites them to become like him, to stop all this judging of teachers and of one another. We too need to see the comfort we live in and stop jockeying for social position and respect, that we might better follow our savior Jesus who lowered himself for us.
