It’s a blazing hot summer day, 1970-something. I’m six, maybe seven, a staff-brat at Camp Ramah in the Poconos, and there is music pouring out of every nook and cranny. Over by the ‘Quad’, a ramshackle housing unit where the coolest of the cool kitchen staff reside, two massive speakers are blasting Santana’s “Black Magic Woman”. We had just acquired a piano, and my mother made a deal with me: I could get a drum kit after a year of piano lessons.
