The emergence of the term ‘cruising’ in reference to anonymous gay sex in public and semi-public locations such as parks and public restrooms rose to prominence in the early 1960s (Dunbar, 2020). That isn’t to say cruising wasn’t happening before the slang was created. However, as homosexuality became more visible to the American public, so did cruising. Cruising locations began to appear throughout the United States in parks, public restrooms, bathhouses, waterfronts, and other similar places.
