We arrived at Campus RV park on the first day of September. Instead of feeling like meteorological fall, it was all summer, all the time. Even the nights were hot. So we knew we would have to adjust some of our original plans. We had already hit so many of our historic sites during the last two stops that we only had two left. The rest of the trip has us staying in the actual parks. <a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZlcQ!,f_auto,q_auto:goo
More Day Trips from Knob Noster (opens the original)
Read excerpt
There were two more sites we visited on our second day at Knob Noster. First up, the Battle of Lexington and then, the Confederate Memorial. The primary significance of the Battle of Lexington, which lasted three days, September 18–20, 1861, was that it gave Major General Sterling Price and the pro-Confederate Missouri State Guard two massive, consecutive victories. The first was the Battle of Wilson’s Creek.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$

We were able to change our reservation at Knob Noster to arrive a day early. It turned out to be good luck because there was a lot to do here. The state park is small but shady and we have a good site with full hookups. It is one mile down the road from Whiteman Air Force Base, the home of the Stealth Bomber. We did hear them but not too often. <a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!0vO9!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsu
Day Trips from Truman Lake (opens the original)
Read excerpt
When it comes to the quest to visit all the Missouri state parks and historic sites, the campgrounds are the easy part. As we have been all over this state, some of the historic sites are truly in the middle of nowhere and that was the case for these two. We visited the Osage Village site as well as the Battle of Island Mound. Both were fairly close to each other but a good 90-minute drive to and from the campground. <a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/imag
Harry Truman Lake (opens the original)
Read excerpt
This lake is new to us, and I have never been to this exact part of Missouri before. The Harry S. Truman Dam and Reservoir, also known as Truman Lake, is located between Clinton and Warsaw, on the Osage River. The area was originally named Kaysinger Bluff Dam and Reservoir in 1954, when construction was authorized. But construction did not begin until August 1964. This lake is about 60 miles west of the Lake of the Ozarks but the drive is a big longer than one hour. The road is pretty curvy. <a
