    For my younger self, castles, ruins, and stately homes were never simply stone buildings. They were the past, preserved and alive in the present. These were fortresses for me to conquer, all with their own obstacles: spiral staircases, dungeons, battlements, and echoing walls. This was my first encounter with history. They made it seem tangible rather than distant. There commenced the ten-year journey that has brought me to Cambridge, with its Tudor timber frames and Gothic Victorian cathedrals.
