Culling the herd in Tremont necessary for deer, residents (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Last summer, I hiked around Bar Island in Frenchman Bay. I was startled by a doe as I was heading back. She was foraging around some dead trees and grass next to the trail. I stopped and waited for her to notice me and run. Unbothered by my presence, she made eye contact and continued to feed. I have spent more than 20 years in the woods deer hunting, and it made me uncomfortable to have this deer so close to me with no fear of me whatsoever. It felt like she wasn’t wild at all.
