Birding: Numerous rare bird sightings in Prescott area lasts weekend (opens the original)
Read excerpt
This past weekend, a number of rare bird species were observed in the Prescott area, including a common tern, Sabineâs gull, red-necked phalarope, cattle egret, Vauxâs swift, red-eyed vireo, and a northern waterthrush, to name a few. So what makes a bird rare? There are two main criteria by which this is determined. First, a bird species is rare if it shows up out of its normal range. For example, cactus wrens are common in parts of Arizona. However, if a cactus wren were to show up in Missi

When I was in the Verde Valley last week, I stopped at the McGuireville rest stop, as they have an on-site wastewater facility. Sounds enticing, doesnât it? Well it does if you are either a shorebird or a birder who likes to observe shorebirds! Wastewater facilities are notoriously good for birdwatching because of the nutrient rich water. Our vendor booth is incredibly popular, since we have anything and everything to do with hummingbirds. We are also the only optics dealer at this event, and we were supported by both Vort
Birding: Spending time in nature with family visiting from out of state (opens the original)
Read excerpt
With family visiting from out of state this past week, we engaged in a lot of outdoor activities. In the past week Iâve hike the Cottonwood Peninsula Trail, sections of the Prescott Circle Trail, the Peavine Trail, the Constellation Trail, Trail #307 in Groom Greek, and I hiked Trail 261 from Granite Basin to the top of Granite Mountain. I also took a short hike on the Bright Angel Trail at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Whew! Needless to say, it was a great week, as I love spending time o
