My friend Alison Espach told me she went to the Jacksonville Public Library a year ago and slept like a baby. (She herself had a new baby, which makes it hard to sleep like a baby at home.) I said, sold! Because I like talking to people about my books and I like a night in a hotel room by myself. This month has been bananas, logistically and emotionally, and so it sort of snuck up on me, but yesterday morning I set my alarm for 5:45am and by 8 I was chilling like a villain in the Delta Lounge. <

I don’t claim to be a good cook, though I can and do make myself most of my meals and proclaim them to be delicious. Here is what I am an expert at: indulging myself by buying expensive things. Here are three things that I consume on a daily basis that are not only worth the money but will (and this is a promise) make you feel like a High Class Dame. First things first. There is only one album that to me, is the perfect bookstore album, which is to say, the perfect record to play, start to finish, inside your (my) bookstore, and it is this: Dolly, Emmylou, and Linda’s Trio. You should put it on right now. <di

It’s a Very Straub Year (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

On Tuesday, my mother’s first solo picture book comes out. Solo as in written on her own! It’s called Ring Ring and it’s about a small child with a loose tooth face-timing their grandmother from their vacation. Anait Semirdzhyan drew the pictures, and I’m telling you with as much objectivity as possible, it’s hilarious. It’s extra hilarious if you have a small child and have ever made FaceTime phone calls to distant loved ones. Here is one spread. <div class
