Either I am asked this question or I see it asked of others. There are so many answers. If this question is answered, the follow-up is not another question but a statement, “That is not happening.” At this point I find it is best not to continue the conversation. A version of that question that stings, especially if it is from someone I care about, is “Why are you so passionate about this?” This question may mean “You are scaring me.” Or, “You have lost perspective and are reading biased news.”
