I have done the Cycle the Erie Canal bicycle tour thirteen times. My son Eric has done it with me ten times. The first few times I did it, the new experiences on the tour made it interesting and compelling. There are historical sites along the route that represent early settlement and canal commerce. The towns and scenery are a respite from daily life. Now, familiarity with all of the aspects of the tour is the thing that I like about it and every year I get something a little different from it.

Today the name of the test, The English Proficiency Exam, sounds provocative. In 1969 I took it as a requirement to receive my college degree at Colorado State University. The test was feared because after four years of study it stood between the students and graduation.The courses and credits in our major were important and for four years I kept a running total to be sure I had more than enough.
