When I came back, the parsnips had grown tall. Over winter, their stems had become cellulose-veined and turgid, crunching as I twisted off branches with wilting, fading leaves. Bright flower heads hung above me, canopied starbursts, delicately drawn. At the end of each fine mustard stalk was a lime green seed, each one a tiny fleshy oval, flat like a ping-pong bat. Where seeds had dropped, there was dot of ochre at the end of the stalk; a full stop, for now.I’d forgotten that I’d planted parsnip
