Uisce Éireann has refused to say when it will address a two-decades-old eyesore blighting a historic Cork city quay and main approach road, despite saying five years ago it was investigating the issue. Taoiseach: Calls to protect Cork Prison coming ‘very late in the day’ (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said there are “other agendas afoot” behind a proposal to place the old Cork Prison on the Register of Protected Structures. It was in the old prison, in August 1920, that Cork lord mayor Terence MacSwiney began the hunger strike that would end, 74 days later, with his death in Brixton Prison, bringing his cause to international attention. A motion to have the building listed as a protected structure will be debated tonight at a special meeting of Cork City Council.
