    So, despite having lived in Taiwan now for 10+ years, I don’t understand Taiwanese. I have some basics that I’ve picked up (“thank you,” “time to eat,” “I don’t understand,” “yes,” “tired”), some food and other miscellaneous words and phrases I grew up with that I didn’t realize were not Mandarin until I moved here (“guava,” “mochi,” “playing house”) and some curses. But I could not even begin to carry on a conversation in Taiwanese.Sometimes, elderly folk will start speaking to me in Taiwanese
