Drucker: Democrats’ greatest divide isn’t race or money (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Overeducated and underpaid: Welcome to the rising faction of voters pushing the Democratic Party to the socialist left and foreshadowing a clash with mainstream liberals in 2028. Strong support from these voters, both young and middle-aged, has advanced several populist progressives and candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America in primaries this year. If you look at the exit polling and geographic patterns, they live in urban areas and university towns and feel inadequately
Drucker: Trump’s army of election deniers is a problem on many levels (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Let’s set aside, for a moment, how ridiculous it is that officials serving in President Donald Trump’s administration, including executive and judicial officials, won’t acknowledge in front of Congress that Joe Biden won the 2020 election. These deliberate dodges — a consistent pattern more than 18 months into Trump’s second presidency — aren’t just political theater; they’re informative. Trump is famously heterodox and transactional on cultural, fiscal and foreign policy matters. During his fir
Drucker: You can’t beat Susan Collins on working-class vibes alone (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Let’s give credit where it’s due to Democrats hoping to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine: Troy Jackson is certainly an improvement over Graham Platner. As a former longtime state legislator, his background has been vetted, and he doesn’t appear burdened by personal scandal (or a Nazi tattoo.) But Democrats — progressive and otherwise — might still be miscalculating. They imagine their new U.S. Senate nominee to be the populist pied piper of coveted working-class voters. In realit
Drucker: The US could ‘abolish ICE.’ Then what? (opens the original)
Read excerpt
It would be political folly for the Democratic Party to fully embrace calls to “abolish ICE,” at least without adopting a substitute blueprint for strong immigration enforcement. That’s not to say Immigration and Customs Enforcement hasn’t abused its power during President Donald Trump’s second term. American citizens have been harassed, detained, even killed. Immigrants with legal status or those that lived in the U.S. for years have suffered similarly, as happened yet again this month with the
Drucker: Money isn’t the root of all political evil (opens the original)
Read excerpt
At the risk of turning myself into a pariah, I don’t think money in politics is a problem. Voters on the right and left don’t seem to agree on much these days. But they tend to share the belief — it’s an article of faith, really — that campaign donations, especially corporate cash, are a corrupting force in American politics. Simply put, voters tend to believe politicians would do the “right thing” (whatever that is) if not for money and its influence on their positions on issues big and small.
