I genuinely do not remember where I first heard about work exchange, and it bothers me more than it probably should. I was sixteen. Somebody told me you could live on the other side of a border in exchange for a few hours of work a day, and it rearranged my entire life. I cannot tell you who. It just arrived. You have to understand what it landed on. My parents still do not have passports. Nobody around me had ever been abroad, and “abroad” was a word you weren’t quite supposed to say out loud.
