Lesson 6: Mixed Media Altar Piece, Part 1 (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

    Read excerpt

For the final project in the Iconic class, I wanted us to create an altar piece. Traditionally, icons came in different sizes and were displayed in places of worship and in homes. Some icons were painted in small, portable frames attached together with a hinge. You could open them up to display them on a shelf. I have such an icon, placed on small wooden pieces. This is the inspiration for this final section of the class.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/

So this icon was born out of this idea: I can forgive - even if it’s mainly so that I can move on - but I never

In June, I went to Montreal and visited the Heroes of Greece, the Age of Troy exhibit at Pointe-a-Calliere. This exhibit was so well curated. I love that they showed both statues of the gods and ordinary objects. there were many surprising elements to this and I truly enjoyed seeing it.When I came back, I decided to paint some of my favorite pieces in a small sketchbook I was using for the summer. I used gouache for this. Gouache is close to an opaque watercolor. The colors are vry saturated a

Lesson 5: Fabric Icons Part 1 (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Neutral tone

    Read excerpt

This next block of lessons in the Iconic class is all about using fabric. I have a nice big stash of fabric - I used to make handstitched plushes and still have a lot of the stash I used at the time. I also brought back a lot of remnants from Mexico when I went in 2015. And Beijing had a great fabric market although it closed in 2018. I really don’t like letting all that great material just sit there. So, I thought we could have fun and use fabric to make some collage. If you don’t have fabric,
