The Bird With the Golden Slippers (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Migratory Snowy Egrets begin arriving in southern Arizona in middle to late September. It is always nice to see the first Snowy Egret of the year. I was visiting one of my favorite farms with friends when we spotted a Snowy Egret in the distant field.<img alt="202609
El Rio Once More (opens the original)

The Town of Marana sponsors many community activities including several at El Rio. I signed up for the September “Birding at El Rio Preserve” led by Jeff Babson. Although there were plenty of birds, including a Belted Kingfisher downing several large orange Koi, and two Neotropic Cormorants playing tug-of-war with a stick, I focused on little dragonflies and butterflies. I was in an agricultural area northwest of Tucson early one morning when I came across a group of Turkey Vultures. The early morning sun cast a golden light on the Turkey Vulture’s dark brown feathers.<a class="

What I Learned About Common Ravens (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I’ve been going out to some agricultural areas near Tucson a bit more often these days. With the change of seasons, I am hoping to welcome both the arrival of some wintering birds but also some migrant birds passing through. One morning a friend and I found a large flock of Common Ravens along a line of trees we were driving by. While most of them flew, one pair stuck around for a bit. Notice the red corners of the one Raven’s mouth?<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://subs
