Dad Talk guide to the Sunday Mass readings
Seeking to understand more about the Sunday Mass readings, I started reading Bible commentaries after Mass several years ago, then giving a 15-minute talk to our children about the context of the readings (history, geography, etc.) and their relationship to each other.

Dad Talk - Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) (opens the original)
Read excerpt
In context, this Sunday's first reading teaches us an important lesson about staying faithful to God rather than giving in to the sin of our culture. Doing so is essential to our salvation. We'll discuss that - plus the importance of holding our desire for heaven in healthy tension with doing God's work here on earth - in today's Dad Talk. Please share with a friend, and God bless! Dad
Dad Talk - Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) (opens the original)

This Sunday's first reading and Gospel reading are about letting go of grievances and forgiving others, no matter how hard it is to do that. After all, God has already forgiven us an unrepayable debt! We'll discuss what that means - and clarify how much the servant in the Gospel passage owed his master - in this week's Dad Talk. Please share with a friend, and God bless! Dad
Dad Talk - Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) (opens the original)
Read excerpt
It is 100% true that Jesus is loving and inclusive--something you hear from many people today. But it is equally true that Jesus wants us to repent from our sins. And if you place yourself outside the Church by violating God's commandments, Jesus will honor that choice. That's why it's so important that we, as members of the Church, call sinners to conversion. Everyone should be called to Christ; everyone should also be given the truth about the necessity of conforming their life to God's laws.
Dad Talk - Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The common thread in this Sunday's second and Gospel readings is that we cannot have worship without sacrifice. Indeed, when we choose to follow Christ, suffering will inevitably follow, as illustrated by Jeremiah in this Sunday's first reading. But when we fasten ourselves to the cross, God uses our suffering to help mold and shape us for eternal life. That will be our focus in this week's Dad Talk. Please share with a friend, and God bless! Dad
Dad Talk - Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Jesus prayed that we would all be "one." Yet today, there are thousands of Christian denominations and very little unity. Why? Because many non-Catholic Christians reject the teaching authority of the Pope, often because Jesus did not talk expressly about that office in his earthly ministry. But there are other subjects - the "Trinity" immediately comes to mind - that do not appear expressly in the scriptures, either. Yet all Christians accept them because they are easily inferred from the Bible
