A Season of Butterflies (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Over the past few years I’ve been surveying butterflies at two sites in Edinburgh, Corstorphine Hill and the city’s Agro-ecology project at Lauriston Farm. Surveys start in Spring and continue into October, so I’ve got a few more weeks to go. In Scotland, we often don’t see many butterflies this late in the year, but fingers crossed I’ll see some in the next few surveys. Most years, we visit Dumfries and Galloway for a short holiday. It’s a wonderful area of Scotland, full of amazing places to see wildlife. I've always enjoyed travelling by bus, ever since I was a teenager and would take the bus to the sixth form college a few miles away from home (and a good distance away from the school where I’d done the first five years of secondary school). That was when I learned to enjoy sitting on the top deck and watching the world go by. The problem back then was that all the smokers gathered on the upper deck, making the atmosphere unpleasant, particularly if the bus was busy. You haven’t been allowed to
From Rubbish to Art (opens the original)

This Substack is, like my original blog and my original Etsy shop (now defunct)1 and my BlueSky account, called Crafty Green Poet. I usually focus on the green element of the name in what I post here, with the occasional poem. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, but for the sake of balance, here’s some crafty content. For many years, I’ve made most of the greetings cards I send to people (paying subscrib
