    On 26 December 2004, the city of Banda Aceh experienced a devastating tsunami. Following a magnitude 9.2 earthquake off the west coast of Aceh, a wave 30 meters tall flattened the city and killed tens of thousands. Most of the city’s buildings can be dated back to the reconstruction efforts and the aid efforts that brought global attention to the small city on the northernmost tip of Sumatra. The alabaster mosque of Masjid Raya Baiturrahman was one of the few structures left standing.
