If you ever picked up Gary Shteyngart’s book Super Sad True Love Story (Random House, 2010), you may recall that in its near-future setting, the 40-ish male narrator still read books even though media, videos, and social media had supplanted them. In this, Shteyngart’s third work, younger people commonly observed with disdain, “Books smell.” Which was a nice play on most avid readers saying fondly that they (we) love the smell of old books.
