You Otter Be in Pictures (opens the original)
Read excerpt
River otters are a common site throughout the Salish Sea, and the Hood Canal is no exception. We frequently see them swimming in Annas Bay, enjoying brief breaks on our swim platform, and occasionally eating fish at the water’s edge. They’ve also denned under our garage and our front deck — very smelly, and have left excrement on our front porch — hideously smelly. Several years ago put wire mesh around the garage foundation, and this year installed sensor lights and an otter cam on the front po

I watched and photographed the full moon set behind the short southern peaks of the Olympics early this morning straight into a billowing blanket of fog and clouds that soon obscured the view. Ending the summer with a golden-brown town and a tally of books.Over the years I managed to keep the r
I’m Celebrating National Photography Day (opens the original)

It’s National Photography Day and I’m celebrating with you, sharing my most recent Milky Way photos.Saturday August 8th my husband and I were among the crowd of hundreds who gathered after 10 p.m. to peer through telescopes provided by a Dark Ranger in the parking lot at Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. (Washington folks: The popular astronomy program, as well as full moon hikes, continue into September, should you want to make a night of it.)We arrived well before dark, and at 5,242 fe
