BRUSSELS — A cross-party consensus is growing in the European Parliament on the need for the EU to take a harder line on China, senior MEP Pascal Canfin told POLITICO. Canfin, the European Parliament’s point person, or rapporteur, on the trade relationship with China, was scathing in his assessment of the threat posed by Beijing’s surging exports. “The whole purpose of Chinese policy is to be the leader of the new global order based on their own power, their own values and the dictatorship of th

He argued that the wording of the referendum question is so loose

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

Kristján Loftsson has spent decades finding ways to keep Iceland’s whaling industry alive. The 83-year-old Icelandic millionaire’s latest idea is to turn whale meat into iron supplements. But he may soon face a problem no new product can solve. On Aug. 29, Icelanders will vote on whether to restart negotiations to join the European Union. A “Yes” vote would reopen a path toward membership — and toward EU rules that prohibit the killing of whales. The EU’s Habitats Directive bans the capture or k

Trump’s Arctic saber-rattling boosts Iceland’s pro-EU campaign (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

Pro-EU campaigners have a handy boogeyman to win over Icelandic voters ahead of a crunch referendum on Saturday: U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump’s threats to annex Greenland — Iceland’s closest neighbor — have added a strong geopolitical dimension to a referendum on resuming membership talks with the EU, which might otherwise have focused on long-standing gripes with Brussels, such as mackerel quotas. And Trump is not the only security risk in the North Atlantic. With Russia and China both pu
