Closing Day doesn’t have the same cachet as Opening Day, for obvious reasons. One is full of hope, of possibility, of excitement. The other is full of answers (for good or ill), of weariness, of loss. Even if your team is going to play into October, something the Cardinals used to do with regularity but now have spent four years on the outside looking in, postseason baseball is entirely different. It’s games on various channels at various times, broadcasters that don’t know the teams, pressure s

As we close in on the climax of perhaps the best movie ever made1, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are batting each other. The Dark Lord has plenty of experience, the young Jedi in training has a few tricks up his sleeve. The Cards just dropped a game they probably should have won to the Atlanta Braves. A 4-3 decision meant the Cards couldn’t split the home stand (in the most insane way possible) and that they finished the first portion of the schedule with a 50-45 record. (Talk about a strange wrinkle—last year they went into the All-Star Break having salvaged the final game of a series they lost to the Braves at home, bringing them to a 51-46 mark. Basically the reverse this season, so make of it what you will.
