    Mellow mallows (opens the original)

This week my diary has been blissfully mundane - visiting parents, gardening, and a lot of sitting at my desk catching up with admin. So rather than boring you with those mundanities, I’m taking a deep dive into mallows, a group of plants that have been thriving in the heatwave this summer. Hollyhocks are one of the better known members of the malvaceae family but there are many more unusual mallows that deserve the limelight, most of them undemanding in terms of soil and situation. <a class="im

Bulb and seed ordering - and the plants I’m getting excited about this week (opens the original)

Hello and welcome to any new subscribers this week. This is my weekly post for paid subscribers in diary form. I’ve been re-engaging with my own garden after a period of being apart - not only because I’ve been on holiday but because I had honestly lost interest in it over the summer as it became drier and hotter. Did you feel the same? Nothing was growing, plants were wilting and I became more and more despondent about it. But September has brought some rain, and after a much needed holiday I’m

Here is another chapter from Pastoral Gardens while I’m away, and the chance to see some of the many other photographs taken on the shoot, that weren’t used in the book. I think these photos show how incredibly beautiful an autumn garden can be, with the textures of foliage, the softness of grasses, and the shapes of seed heads. Most of the plants in this garden are native North American species. <a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nbmz!,f_a

An intimate look into Sarah Price’s garden (opens the original)

I’m on holiday for the next two weeks, so I’m leaving you with two chapters from my book Pastoral Gardens: this week, Sarah Price’s garden near Abergavenny, and next week a garden designed by Luciano Giubbilei in Virginia. When I work with photographer Andrew Montgomery, we always have hundreds of photos to edit down, and only a small handful of these images make it into the final book. So this is a good opportunity to show you a wider range of his photographs by including some out-takes to show

Star plants for September (opens the original)

    Excerpt

Welcome everyone to my monthly post for all subscribers. It’s been an exceptional summer here in the southern part of Britain. Plants that would normally be in their prime - Aster frikartii ‘Monch’, Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’ and all the dahlias and cosmos - are looking half their normal selves, and some of the plants I’d be harvesting seed from have barely flowered. However, things are looking up as we come into a period of rain, so I’m waiting to see what happens during the first part of the month,
