BLUE ATLAS

Welcome to Blue Atlas! I'm a poet working to live a creative life with two cats and some African travel. Newest book: Gallery of Postcards and Maps: New and Selected Poems. I'm a fan of dark coffee and deep friendships. This is a space to honor poets.

Holding Fast to the Last Slice of Summer: Laughter, Poetry, Friends, and More (opens the original)

    Excerpt

Dear Faithful Reader,This September, as in tomorrow, I will begin my 28th year of teaching at Highline College. If I add my year at the University of Cape Town, and my two plus years at the University of Oregon, I have been a college/university professor for over 30 years. How did this happen? I bet I am not the only one thinking this. I really want to go out and buy my last pair of back to school shoes this afternoon but it’s a long way from home to find a shoe store and ordering a pair online

On this Last Day of July, Please Come Flying (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Neutral tone

    Read excerpt

Each year, I want July to last forever and this year is no different. Today the garden is lush and full of blossoms. Strawberries and blueberries offer themselves to me daily. Even the blackberries and sungold tomatoes are beginning to ripen. The cats know the coolest spot in the house. Even in Seattle, it seems as if life can continue on this way forever. Such is the imagination’s power. Elizabeth Bishop lived here for a time and so did Denise Levertov. They also lived in Boston, Massachusetts
