My bite sized letter to Robert Caro (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Neutral tone

    Read excerpt

I wrote a letter to Robert Caro, author of The Power Broker, even though I have no idea where to send it. I was nervous because he’s a writing giant and I didn’t want to misspell anything or flub any grammar. I wanted to if not impress him, at least not embarrass myself. I’m glad I got the word “disquietude” in there. It’s the perfect word for how the stories of Robert Moses’s brutal, conniving, petty tactics make me feel. I enjoy little sprints of hyper-disciplined behavior. But they are just that: Sprints. The habits never stick and I backslide, burn out, and begin the phase of having no expectations for myself. “Just live and be normal” becomes my mantra. After a few weeks of that I start to feel guilty, get new goal ideas, and t

Best of Summer 2026 (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

    Read excerpt

Summer 2026 was one for the books. I coached my son’s baseball team, the Green Giants, and it was a fun season full of learning. I only got in one heated exchange with another coach, but we have a history and he knows he’s a jerk. We went on fun weekend road trips to see new places and visit family. We watched a lot of World Cup games and really embraced the (sometimes painfully slow) game of football. And we have new pets! Kittens Shadow and Splat joined us in June and it has been fun to watch t
