One Month at a Time: The right dog is the one you one you can't resist (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Tracey Diuguid listened to my story and had me scoot my chair a little so I could look at pictures of dogs on the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association website. Iâd told her Penny, my last dog, was a terrier. So, she showed me a couple of small dogs. âHereâs a terrier. Heâs really cute,â she said. âAre you looking for a small dog?â Tracey pointed to a picture of what mightâve been some kind of chihuahua. I couldnât tell, but that wasnât for me. âI donât have a real prefer
One Month at a Time: Can you put a price tag on a best friend? (opens the original)
Read excerpt
A guy in a car with a crate had a couple of puppies in a side lot by Ashton Place Kroger. Near the very adorable puppies was a sign. Behind the wheel of my car, I glanced over and considered, âDo I want a hound? And what kind of hound does he mean?" They didnât look like Bassett hounds, deer hounds or bloodhounds, the three kinds of hounds I was familiar with. If I drove over there, was the man going to hit me up with a story? Would a free hound suddenly have a price tag? I was aware of my s
One Month at a Time: Is September the month for a new best friend? (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The hum of the fan blowing over the fenced play yard droned loudly, but not enough to drown out the sound of dogs barking from somewhere inside the building. I wasnât the first person through the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Associationâs door on a Sunday afternoon. I wasnât even in the first dozen. Ten minutes after noon, the parking lot was half full, and the building lobby was bustling. I stepped inside and froze near the front door. I felt bewildered. Then, a volunteer stepped over. Near
One Month at a Time: Restaurant doesn't live up to the hype; an offering for Mothman (opens the original)
Read excerpt
All that I could come up with for an offering on such short notice was a dented can of black beans. They were an off-brand. The labeling was in Spanish â Frijoles Negros. A pair of young women stared at me as I pulled the can out of the front pocket of my cargo shorts. Holding the beans, I stepped up to the Mothman statue in Point Pleasant, Mason County, and placed them lovingly on the sidewalk before it. Then, I quickly walked away before someone called a cop or a high school vice principal.
One Month at a Time: Sleeping in tents still strange; speaking with strangers less so (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I place the tent under the trees, near a break in the fence. On the other side, festivalgoers in various shades of groovy regalia (or just T-shirts and shorts) walked past on their way to and from the music somewhere at the bottom of the hill. The tent looked pretty good to me, even though it took me two tries to position the rainfly correctly. Inside, my sleeping bag covered an inflatable mattress pad. My favorite pillow rested at the head of the camping mattress. I had a fully charged lantern
