When I started listening to Eve on a drive to New York this past weekend, I already knew that the vast majority of medical research that’s conducted on humans is conducted on men. But to hear Cat Bohannon—who does a great job of reading the book herself—actually say it and explain why it happens and how deep the problem runs caused me to exclaim, “Whaaat??” That was only the first of several such interjections on my drive, although those that followed tended to be less outraged and more astonish

(At this point, there’s no reason to imagine I will ever convert to a Kindle for vacation or any other reason.)Friends singing Outlander’s praises had mumbled

I’m about two-thirds of the way through listening to Yellowface, which won a bunch of awards after its publication in 2023. It’s a great book for listening because it follows a fairly straightforward plot with a manageable number of characters, namely two writers who are friends mostly by circumstance: the struggling white writer June Hayward and the wildly successful Asian writer Athena Liu. When a tragedy puts June in a position to ride to success on Athena’s coattails, she does it and becomes
