Violence was not a stranger in many mining towns but few if any have had four killings involving the same person, Jerry Goodwin. But were they murders? Jeremiah Samuel Goodwin was born in 1854 in Maine. In 1873, he arrived in You Bet, a then prosperous gold mining town about 12 miles east of Grass Valley. He soon became the operator and part owner of the You Bet hydraulic mine. A colorful and controversial character, he was known â especially later in life â for being drunk and being armed.
