    My latest over at JapanBall tells the story of Hiroki Kokubo, number 17 on NPB’s all-time home run list. Before he was managing the SoftBank Hawks to pennants, he was a star slugger for the team, helping lead them to pennants.His rookie season in 1994 was nothing special (a .215 average in 78 games) and the Hawks (then owned by Daiei) sent him to Hawaii’s winter league that offseason, where he wound up winning the batting title.
