The neutrality thing sparks a referendum (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The promised series on Swiss neutrality, which includes a lot of history and rumination on shifting geopolitics, is set to continue following my return from medical leave. However, philosophical musings and sharp analysis have been interrupted by current Swiss domestic politics. On 27 September is a national referendum on Swiss neutrality, and the positioning, campaigning, and shouting in recent weeks has been distracting, to say the least.A restack, share, or heart click gives my writing more vi
Stirring up 9-11 memories (opens the original)
Read excerpt
On the 25th anniversary of the event that ended the optimistic decades of my adulthood, I found myself, ironically, in the US. It’s not my country anymore, at least on paper. We had crossed the border to Canada on September 10, to visit the Niagara Falls, and the jovial Canadian border guard was genuinely excited to welcome two Swiss citizens to his country. Learning to walk, again (opens the original)
Read excerpt
When my physiotherapist predicted I’d be walking without crutches by the end of July, I did not believe her. It was the first week of July and the omnipresent heat wave broke for two days, so I was moving more than the worn path of bed–bath–sofa–kitchen. With crutches. Concentrating on every step so that I wasn’t falling out of rhythm and accidentally putting too much weight on my newly reconstructed left knee.A restack, share, or heart click gives my writing more visibility. Rerun: Speaking in tongues (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I have been living outside my first language for 35 years. When I left the US for (eastern) Europe, it was before the internet, smart phones, language apps, etc. So it was do or die, pretty much. <img alt="" class="sizing-normal" height="2111" src="https://substack
