Another Poem to Love

Poet and Editor Brian Spears shares close readings and appreciations of individual poems. Mostly contemporary, mostly by people still writing today. And maybe some pictures of things I've crocheted.

My dad was born in 1940 somewhere around San Antonio. His first experience of life was the doctor dropping him on his head. From what I’ve heard there was no immediate thought that he’d been harmed, though decades later doctors did a brain scan and discovered that basically half his brain had been shut down, and had, for lack of a better term, rewired itself so that he was able to function normally.A few years later, he contracted childhood polio, as did lots of kids in those days. The polio vac

As you may have read elsewhere, I’m doing a project at Patreon titled “Eating Popeyes in Romania” which is about our family’s ongoing experiences in Iași while Amy is a Fulbright Scholar. Amy just posted a piece about our epic journey to get here on her Substack and you should all go read it (along with everything else she writes because, no bias here, she’s effing brilliant). About three weeks ago I teased a new project. No more teasing. The Patreon is live, and I’d really appreciate it if you’d take a look at it. I plan to post at least every two weeks in the free tier, once a week in the paid tiers. And if you sign up for the top tier (which is only $10 a month), I’ll mail you a handwritten postcard each month from one of the places we visit whether from Romania or from elsewhere in Europe. Now for the reason we’re doing all t

When I was a teenaged Jehovah’s Witness, the church released a book called Reasoning From the Scriptures which was full of scenarios we might run into while preaching from door to door. The idea was that we would be able to practice overcoming objections in advance, and would have a set of scriptures ready to refute any possible objection. I guess the idea was that armed with this book, we’d be able to debate people into joining. Or at least, that’s how I saw it. I was, after all, a teenaged boy
