Anna Talks Ukraine

I'm a Brit who spends a lot of time volunteering in Ukraine, especially the east, which is worst affected by the war. I travel, conduct interviews, dodge missiles and try to see the situation with minimal filter so I can help people back home do the same.

Magda is a demon driver, even by Ukrainian standards. She seems to be able to control the vehicle with her mind, never mind her hands. The sleek Formula One racer in question is an ageing minibus with only one broken window, and Magda is actually Polish. But three or so times a week she picks up people evacuated by frontline teams and drives them the three and a half hours from a transfer point in Kramatorsk or Sloviansk to Lozova transit centre1.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href

A guided bomb had exploded near enough for the edge of the blast wave to tickle us, and as the Russians like to bomb roughly the same spot up to four times at once, the next one might have brought shrapnel. But it didn’t. And Halyna (Vse Bude Dobre communications manager) and I were inside their office, so , yeah… Kramatorsk, autumn 2026.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!IIVJ!,f_auto,q_auto:good

Last Tuesday War Beard (aka Kolia) picked me up outside the Universal Aid Ukraine base and combined hugging me and telling me he’d missed me with simultaneously demanding that I hurry up and get in the van. He was wearing body armour. Ksenia of Druzi Space, also in the van, was wearing body armour. I’ve never seen them do that before. And it spent at least a quarter of the time on their bodies as opposed to sitting on the van seats.</s
