Years ago, back in the eighties, I wrote a column for the San Francisco Review of Books entitled “R.B.Tyler’s Paranoid Notebook.” I used a nom de plume for the column because I wanted to write about working in the AIDS epidemic, (which, as readers know, I have written about here in my as-yet unpublished book Ward 86). I used the pseudonym because I didn’t want my colleagues to know I was writing about the epidemic (and them).I had used a different pseudonym—”William Sharp
